People see what they want to see, and hear what they want to hear. When a young teenager who is frankly rather scruffy-looking and homely comes begging for help to the Teen Titans to save their secret agent parents, when that teenager says their name is Dani Chase... well, if that gets misheard as "Danny" and everyone assumes the teenager is a boy... someone who has been raised by spies and trained in espionage since she was six years old is going to just go with it.

Danielle did question, briefly, if "boy" was a better fit than "girl", but ultimately concluded that she was definitely a she -- no matter what other people thought. Danielle just stayed quiet about it and let people make their assumptions. (Maybe Raven, who has weird demon powers and can sense all manner of things, knew the truth, but she never spoke it.) In the end, being thought of as a boy made the Teen Titans more willing to let Danny into the field, and that was just fine with her.
